Unless you have a good reason for not doing so, we'd advise Installing Kartris using the Web Platform Installer. It is by far the easiest way to install Kartris.
If you do have a good reason for not using the Web Platform Installer, read on.
This article covers the basic process of setting up Kartris on your own computer if it is running Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8. If you are setting Kartris up on a web server, or Windows XP/2003 please see the appropriate article (related links at foot of this article).
Prerequisites
Before installing Kartris you must ensure you have the required Microsoft software in place to run it.
You must be logged in with Administrator privileges.
Step 1
Download the Kartris zip file from our web site and unzip it to a folder on your web server root folder. This is typically found at C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ but might vary depending on your system setup. We will assume your new folder is called 'kartris' in the next steps, but you can give it another name if you wish.
Step 2
Open up the Internet Information Services (IIS) control panel and expand the default web site tree. Right click the Kartris folder and select 'Convert to application' to turn the Kartris folder into an application.
Step 3
You should now see the middle panel of the admin screen showing '/Kartris Home' at the top, and below are a number of icons. Its important the screen shows '/Kartris Home' to ensure that you make the following changes to the Kartris application, and not any other webs you have setup.
Double-click the "Error Pages" icon. Right-click the 404 entry and select 'Edit...'.
Select "Execute a URL on this site" and in the URL field below enter '/kartris/404.aspx', then click "OK".
Step 4
On the website tree in the left panel, click 'Application Pools'. DefaultAppPool should be listed as using .NET Framework v4.0. If this isn't the case you need to ensure that you have installed .NET Framework v4.0 or above.
Step 5
(During this step Vista might throw up security confirmations requesting admin authentication. You'll need to give permission where asked).
Back in Windows Explorer, right click the Kartris folder, select "properties" and click the security tab. If 'Network Service' is listed, select that.
If 'NETWORK SERVICE' isn't listed you need to add this - click 'Edit' then on the next dialogue 'Add' and then 'Advanced', then 'Find Now'. Scroll down to find 'Network Service' and then 'OK' on the open dialogues until you reach the original 'Permissions' dialogue.
When you reach the 'Permissions' dialogue box, select 'Full Control' (tick the 'Allow' box against this). Then 'OK'.
Step 6
Go to your site by pointing your browser to http://localhost/kartris/
Step 7
The setup routine should now open up an walk you through the rest of the installation process.
Step 8
When asked for the license number, enter a value you were given when you purchased a license. If you don't have this (because you're using a free or trial license), then check the license.config file in the root of the web. This contains your license number.
Step 9
At the database setup page input details of your database.
If you are using SQL Express you have the option to run from a database file within the Kartris web (making setup much quicker). Select 'Windows Authentication', click to use the 'local instance'. This will use the .mdf file in the App_Data folder of your site for the database storage.
Step 10
Kartris will create a random admin password for you, and display this on screen. It is vital you keep a copy of this - it is best to copy and paste to a text file, as it is easy to make an error if you write it down. You can change this later.
Step 11
Once setup and logged in to the back end, you can switch between the front and back end of Kartris by clicking the Kartris icon link in the top left corner of the page.
